Pakistan celebrated the 60th Defence Day with great solemnity and pride, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for its sovereignty and integrity. Held annually on September 6th, Defence Day holds immense significance in Pakistani history – particularly recalling heroic efforts during 1965 Indo-Pak War. President, Prime Minister, and military leadership paid their utmost respects on this momentous occasion by offering heartfelt tributes and declaring Pakistan’s undying devotion to protecting its borders.
At a solemn ceremony held at Rawalpindi’s General Headquarters, Pakistan’s top political and military leaders came together to recognize those brave soldiers and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of Pakistan. President Dr. Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Imran Khan, and General Qamar Javed Bajwa all paid their respects to these martyrs who with courage and valor upheld its freedom during times of intense conflict.
Dr. Arif Alvi offered his deepest thanks and appreciation to all those who had sacrificed their lives during 1965 and subsequent conflicts, protecting Pakistan’s territorial integrity and defending freedom for Pakistan. Our martyrs are true heroes; their sacrifice reminding us to cherish every freedom. Their bravery serves as an inspiration for future generations who see it first hand and show it with their actions of patriotism and sacrifice.”
Prime Minister Imran Khan in his address reflected upon the resilience and courage of Pakistan’s armed forces, honoring their sacrifices by never forgetting. He highlighted Defence Day as more than just a day to remember but an opportunity to renew resolve: “Defence Day isn’t simply about remembering; it is also an occasion to renew our resolve that stands united and strong against any threat to protect motherland”. Prime Minister Khan applauded them for protecting both peace and security at home as well as through international peacekeeping operations around the globe.
General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Army Staff, pledged his troops’ commitment to defend Pakistan against external and internal threats at a ceremony commemorating martyrs’ sacrifices engraved into every Pakistani heart by our military. General Bajwa expressed his thanks for unwavering support of Pakistanis while acknowledging that part of their strength lay within this partnership between nation and army.
Pakistan hosted an elaborate Defence Day events celebration that featured an extraordinary military parade to demonstrate the state-of-the-art defense capabilities of Pakistan, such as modern weapons systems and equipment used by its armed forces. Held at Islamabad’s Parade Ground, this special ceremony included high-ranking officials, foreign diplomats, citizens and patriotic performances, military drills and aerial displays to reinforce Pakistan’s preparedness to meet external threats head on with unity and strength.
One of the most moving moments of the day was a ceremony to pay homage to fallen soldiers, where families of fallen soldiers were invited. Their presence served as a poignant reminder of their personal sacrifices while nation’s leaders took time out of their schedules to greet and honor these families as a way of honoring those whose service remains imprinted in our collective memory.
Defence Day celebrations across the nation included many other activities. Educational institutions hosted programs aimed at raising student awareness of defending nation sovereignty and remembering fallen members of our armed forces, while citizens from various walks of life participated in candlelight vigils, charity events, and social media campaigns to express their solidarity with our military personnel and express our thanks for their sacrifice.
