London Brother of Manchester Arena bomber, who is serving a life-long sentence for his part in the deadly terror attack, reported assaulted prison officials in a secure facility in the UK.
Prison service sources have confirmed Hashem Abedi, the younger brother of suicide bomber Salman Abedi, assaulted several guards in a routine inspection in HMP Frankland earlier this week. The severity of the guards injured has not been fully revealed, but officials have confirmed that two of the staff members needed medical care.
“This was a serious incident involving a high-risk inmate,” an official from the UK Prison Service said. “Violence against our staff is completely unacceptable, and those responsible will face the full force of disciplinary and legal action.”
Hashem Abedi was found guilty in 2020 of 22 charges of attempted murder, killing, and conspiracy to cause explosions in his role in the preparation and planning for the Manchester Arena bombing, which resulted in the deaths of 22 people near the end the Ariana Grande performance.
The assault on prison staff has raised public concern about the treatment of terrorists convicted in the prison system in the United Kingdom. Security has apparently been increased in the prison and an internal investigation is in progress.
Justice Secretary officials have stated that actions have been taken in order to avoid similar incidents and safeguard prisoners. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of all staff and will not tolerate such acts of aggression,” one official stated.
The incident could put an additional pressure to the authorities. re-evaluate the protocols for high-risk prisoners and evaluate whether additional safeguards are required to control people who are convicted of crimes related to terrorism.
