In what has become one of the deadliest incidents for Israel forces in recent weeks, five soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were killed and 14 others injured on Tuesday when an IED detonation in northern Gaza detonated powerfully, during an ongoing ground operation to dismantle militant infrastructure there.

According to IDF reports, troops were conducting a search and clearance mission near Beit Hanoun when an explosive device detonated beneath an armored personnel carrier and caused extensive damage, instantly killing four soldiers on site and another succumbing shortly after airlifting him for treatment in southern Israel. Of 14 injured, at least three are currently receiving care at various military medical facilities – though three remain critically ill.

The IDF has identified this incident as a “pre-planned and coordinated ambush” carried out by Palestinian militant factions believed to have used tunnel routes to plant an IED underneath an existing route. Hamas, which controls Gaza Strip, has not claimed responsibility but has expressed approval in statements released through affiliated media outlets.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari addressed the nation in an evening briefing, noting:
“Today has been an extremely sad and tragic day for the IDF. Our hearts go out to the families of those lost and those injured; operations will continue in northern Gaza; those responsible will be brought to justice.”

He confirmed that Israeli forces have launched retaliatory airstrikes against suspected militant positions in the area, such as weapons depots and tunnel shafts, including weapons caches.

After the incident, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an emergency security meeting in Tel Aviv to reaffirm Israel’s dedication to its campaign in Gaza. Netanyahu stated: “We will not permit terror to weaken our security; our soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice protecting Israel and we are determined not to waste their efforts,” according to him.

The deadly ambush comes amid rising tensions and ongoing military escalation in Gaza – now entering its ninth month – which Israeli military maintains is focused on eliminating threats to civilian life while humanitarian organizations express alarm over growing civilian casualties as well as ongoing destruction in the region.

The UN has issued a call for all parties to exercise restraint and work toward renewing a ceasefire; however, immediate de-escalation seems unlikely in light of ongoing hostilities and political impasse.

As news of their deaths spread, citizens began gathering in several cities throughout Israel for vigils – lighting candles and bearing signs in solidarity with bereaved families – lighting candles or carrying signs with messages of support to show solidarity for the fallen soldiers.

Israeli casualties from Gaza campaign have now exceeded 300 since its start, underscoring its intensity and high cost. IDF vows to continue its operations in Gaza until “complete neutralization of terrorist capabilities” can be accomplished.
